Course Outline

  • Phase 1: Understanding our Values

    • Here we learn what values are and how to find them.  We learn that values are concepts that can only be represented through works and acts, and that fulfillment comes from bringing our values into reality.

  • Phase 2: Creating a Values Map

    • We create a map of our values that is meant to be a guide for its creator.  It can be used passively, reactively, and actively.  Students can passively use it by studying it routinely and consistently keeping their values in mind, reactively use it to help them make decisions when obstacles or opportunities arise, or actively use it to create a vision for their future.

  • Phase 3: Creating a Vision for Our Future

    • Students actively use their Values Map to create a vision for themselves in the future that fulfills their values both at work and in their personal lives.  We then review our vision and ensure that it is fulfilling others needs like finances, personal maintenance, and socialization.

  • Phase 4: Backwards Planning

    • Here students create a path from their vision to where they are right now.  They identify both the “hard” and “soft” requirements of their vision and determine paths to them or, if the requirements are unknown, determine paths to figure out these requirements.

  • Phase 5: A Practice for Dealing with Stumbles and Obstacles

    • No one gets to take a straight path to their vision and everyone makes mistakes along the way.  This course ends with teaching a practice to help students deal with obstacles and mistakes and not let them give up on finding fulfillment.

Course Requirements

  • A computer that can connect to Zoom and can download Microsoft Word documents

  • This course was designed with high school juniors through college undergraduates in mind.  However, the concepts and exercises are universal, and all who need assistance in creating a plan for their future are welcomed.

Additional Notes

  • There is no required additional work outside of the course.  While it would likely benefit the student to work or think about what is taught in the course outside of class, there is ample time in class for students to conduct classwork.

  • Students are never expected to share your work with anyone else.  Some dreams and visions are meant to be shared, others must remain private to the individual.
